In 1930, Augustus G. Paine Jr. gave the Paine Memorial Free Library, as a gift, to the town of Willsboro. It was built in memory of his parents, Augustus G. and Charlotte Bedell Paine. In addition to furnishing the library and establishing its original collection of five thousand books, Mr. Paine provided it with a permanent endowment.
The Library's first librarian was Marion Mason, who served the Willsboro community for fifty years. Janice Allen succeeded Mrs. Mason as Librarian in 1971 and was joined by Janet Tucker, who became Assistant Librarian in 1973. Janice Allen retired June 30th, 2000 with Cheryl Blanchard taking the helm as the third Library Director. Alice Ward Joined us in November of 2001 as the new Assistant Librarian upon the retirement of Mrs. Tucker.
With the establishment of the Clinton, Essex, Franklin Library System in 1953, the Paine Memorial Free Library was included as one of its twenty-nine member libraries. The CEF System, one among twenty-two library systems in New York State, provides many programs, which enhance the services provided by its member libraries.
Reflecting new trends in library service, the library is now a lively center of intellectual and community activity for people of all ages; in addition, it cooperates with the local school to produce library programs for students.
To better accommodate increased programming, the Library recently renovated its lower level to provide additional space. Through the generosity of local residents, businesses, and the Friends of the Library, the building now includes a children's book corner, a rare book collection, and a variety of equipment, which strengthen the capability of the library.
Augustus G. Paine's gift to the town of Willsboro more than half a century ago has become a model of how a small town library can make an impact on its community. We hope that you will take advantage of the range of services available at the library
